The Lakers faced off against the Brooklyn Nets in the first match of preseason. The Nets won 123 to 97. Even though the Lakers lost, the controversy surrounding Dwight Howard was a major talking point. In a strange twist of events, Howard was awarded a technical foul. After a 10-minute review, Howard was deemed to have been fouled and became the fouler.
After a 3-pointer by Austin Reaves, a loose ball foul was called. Day’Ron Sharpe, Dwight Howard, and Chaundee Brown fought for a position. Sharpe was then accidentally elbowed to the mouth. This inadvertently led to a review by officials. Dwight was finally fouled from the court. His scored free throw was disallowed and retaken Chaundee Brown who then missed the shot.
Signings New
LA Lakers will see a different team in the 2022 season. The previous season saw them suffer many injuries, which led to their inability to make the playoffs. Among the most notable was the trade for Russell Westbrook. While Westbrook is an ex-MVP, he is also one of the highest-paid league players. However, his style of play hasn’t produced winning basketball.

LeBron James is LA’s biggest winner. With the new partnership, they hope to replace Westbrook’s previous form. The trade caused a chain reaction of trades by the Lakers. A roster complete was required. There were no minimum contracts available, so a group of veteran players moved to LA on one year contracts. The Lakers will rise to the top because of the experience they have gained.
Court of Youngsters
Their age has been a big talking point during the offseason with regards to the Lakers new roster and acquisitions. Ironically, a few Lakers players below 25 stole Sunday’s show for the purple-and-gold.
On a night that many veterans had started late, the three youngest players on this roster were at their best. Malik Monk led the charge with 14 points. Monk, who had one of his best seasons at Charlotte, joined the Lakers to compete for a starting position as one of many players.
LeBron James
Retired NBA stars eventually feel the effects of ageing. Kobe Bryant lost his agility in the year after his Achilles injury. Kobe Bryant’s second retirement was due to fatigue. The Washington Wizards offered Kobe a third chance.
He is now in his 37th season with the NBA, and 19th in the league. This puts him in an uncharted territory. It is rare for a player to average 25 points per game in his 35th season. It has been achieved by only three players. Karl Malone (1999) and Alex English (1988) are two of the three who have achieved this feat. LeBron James has also achieved this feat in recent years, both last season as well as this season. Kobe Bryant achieved this feat despite having a torn Achilles in the 2012 season. LeBron James’s recent seasons have been equally impressive.

LeBron missed 27 games during each of his three seasons in Los Angeles, despite being one of the most talented players in the game when he was fully healthy. LeBron sustained a groin injury in December due to a slip-and-fall. Solomon Hill tore LeBron’s legs, resulting in a severe sprained ankle. LeBron’s injuries were quite close to each other, despite a relatively injury-free career. It is difficult to determine if each injury was random or if LeBron’s ageing body is making it more fragile.
Carmelo Anthony
Carmelo Anthony has lived in the NBA for a long time. This experience has given him a lot of knowledge. He has been involved in many roles and worked with different teams over the past few years.
Carmelo Anthony’s shooting and shot creation skills will be a huge asset to the Lakers this year. Carmelo Anthony seems to be willing to give up his usage in order to help the Los Angeles Lakers. He is also open to playing any role on the team.
A recent announcement by assistant coach Phil Handy has allowed Carmelo Anthony to pick where he wants to play in the lineup. Handy said, “Wherever he wishes” when asked how Carmelo Anthony would fit in to the lineup.
Shay Murphy
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reports that Shay Murphy has been hired by the Los Angeles Lakers as a coach associate. Murphy was a player in the WNBA as well as USC. She will be working with Quinton Crawford, Quinton Crawford and John Lucas III as part of the Lakers’ coaching team.
